44 countries supported the idea of a special tribunal for Russia

Participants of the international conference “Restoring Justice for Ukraine” held in The Hague on April 2 adopted a political declaration. The document, which supports the creation of a special tribunal for Russia, was supported by 44 countries out of 57 present at the event, according to the Dutch government’s website.

The text of the declaration, published on the government portal, reports a strong condemnation of some of Russia’s actions. It refers to Russia’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine and the annexation of part of Ukrainian territories, which “is a blatant violation of the UN Charter.”

The signatory countries, referring to the order of the International Court of Justice of March 16, 2022, on the immediate cessation of military operations, called on Russia to end the war it has unleashed against Ukraine.

It is also emphasized that the countries intend to work on the establishment of a special tribunal to bring Russia to justice for the crime of aggression against Ukraine. This should ensure fair punishment for the top military and political leadership of the Russian Federation. As noted in the document, the participants “welcome the significant progress in this direction”.

The Declaration calls on states and international organizations to contribute to the development of the legal framework and to provide the international support necessary to complete this process. Special thanks are expressed to the Netherlands for its willingness to host the special tribunal.
